This is an essential couse for PhD students at ID KAIST. (open in fall semester)

Design Education has been based on craftsmanship or apprenticeship. This became a serious problem in the PhD level design education. It appears there is no common ground in postgraduate education in design. Design reearchers need to extend the body of knowledge in design discipline.

This course is to clarify what the design knowledge is, and to understand how to extend the body of design knowledge. Here are some questions for this course.

  • What is the design knowledge?
  • How to extend the body of design knowledge?
  • What are the high valued design research?
  • What are the high impact design research?
  • Are there good research methods? (Scientific method, Engineering method, social science method, Humanity method?)
  • What methods are appropriate for different kinds of research?
  • How to integrate Practitioner-ship and Scholarship? How to create harmony between academic research and practice?

At the end of the semester, students are expected to have a clear picture of the past, present and future of design research. Students learn different Design Research Methods from literature review Students will understand the criteria of good design research works. Students will know how to write a good design research paper. Students will learn how to develop structured ideas and develop them into a rational argument.

The course is structured in three parts.

  • Part 1: Literature review on selected articles on design research.
  • Part 2: Students survey good design research papers based on the criteria and rationale developed during the literature review.
  • Part 3: Research Proposals based on the understanding of the criteria of good design research and good papers.
