ACM interactions is one of the most popular magazines among interaction design researchers and practitioners. Prof. Nam is writing blogs for the magazine. The March blog was titled as Enlightenment by lesson, rather than by lecture.

17 Mar. 2013 : Prof. Nam's lecture about HCI, Interaction Design, UI and UX

Prof. Nam was invited by sGen Global, a startup business competition. Prof. Nam gave a lecture on HCI. The lecture focused on how to create successfull business through the human centered design philosophy. The definitions of HCI, interaction design, UI and UX were introduced as well as practice methods and tools to be useful for practitioners.


27. Feb. 2013 : Hanjong Kim won the Grand Prix award for the KAIST URP

Hanjong Kim, a new master student joining CIDR, won the Gran Prix award for the Undergraduate Research Participation Program of KAIST. He designed an instant musical note printing system called XTempo for acoustic gutar players. The work is also accepted for the ACM CHI2013 video showcase program.


7. Feb. 2013 : Prof. Nam's Lecture on Understanding UI & UX atKEIT

Prof. Tek-Jin Nam visited Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology to give a lecture on Understanding User Interface and User Experience from a design perspective.


10 Jan. 2013 : iF Concept Design Award 2013

Prof. Nam contributes iF Concept Design Award 2013 as a juroren. It is one of the largest international design awards for young design talent. Winners will be decided on early April.

31 Jan. 2013 : Presentations at HCI Korea 2013

Those were five presentations from CIDR at HCI Korea 2013. Jungu Sim presented a spatial and active tangible block. Jinah Kim presented the Breathing Frame prototype. Kyungmin Baek showed the application of transparent displays. Minjeon Sohn and Juwhan Kim showed their continuing research on sustainable interaction design and designers' explorative prototyping tools.


04 Dec. 2012 : CheekTouch & POKE at KAIST Newspaper

CheekTouch & POKE was selected as a 2012's research outcome which brought honor to KAIST. Those were introduced at KAIST Newspaper.

15 Oct. 2012 : CIDR at NordiCHI'12

Moon-Hwan Lee presented his research on"Understanding Impacts of Hidden Interfaces on Mobile Phone Experience" at NordiCHI'12 conference, held at ITU, Copenhagen.


11 May. 2012 : Prof. Nam gave a talk at Nokia Research Center, USA

Prof. Tek-Jin Nam visited Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto to give a talk about interactive product design and creative design tools and methods.


10 May. 2012 : CIDR at CHI'12

One Note (Young-Woo Park) and one Work-In-Progress poster (Yea-Kyung Row) were presented at CHI'12 Austin, Texas, USA. The note was about the user study result of CheekTouch, a prototype supporting remote interpersonal touch. The poster introduced a vision of future smart products.

6 April. 2012 : KAIST-RCA GoGlobal 2012: Seoul Social City Software

Prof. Tek-Jin Nam with Ashley Hall, the deputy head of IDE department of RCA and Prof. Peter Childs from Imperial College led the KAIST-RCA collabroative GoGlobal 2012 project titled Seoul Social City Software. The project investigated ways to addres system level social design problems by creative design thinking. 43 KAIST students worked with 37 RCA IDE students tackled social connection and revival theme of Dongdaemun area in Seoul. KAIST and RCA teams carried out the project for three weeks from March 19 to April 6. The exhibition are held in Seoul Design Foundation till the 6th of May 2012. 29 March. 2012 : Juwhan Kim Global PhD Fellowship from Korea Research Foundation

Juwhan Kim is selected as a 2012 Global PhD Fellowshop reciepient. Global PhD Fellowshop program of Korea Research Foundation supports a few PhD students in all disciplines so they grow as world best researchers.



1 December. 2011 : Tek-Jin Nam's UNIST Talk

Prof. Tek-Jin Nam was invited by the school of design and human engineering, UNIST to give a talk about education and research activities of CIDR. The focus of the talk was on the integration of design with technology.



2 November. 2011 : IASDR'11 Conference at TUDelft

Young-Woo Park presented his research on finding "Role of Touch for Enriching Remote Interpersonal Interaction" at IASDR'11 conference, held at Netherlands, TUDelft.



17 October. 2011 : Young-Woo Park's Work at UIST'11

He presented a poster, "Poke: Emotional Touch Delivery through an Inflatable Surface over Interpersonal Mobile Communications" at UIST 2011, Santa barbara, California. Click here to see the video



8 October. 2011 : KSDS'11 Conference

Minjeong Shon presented her research on sustainable interaction design at KSDS(Korean Society of Design Science 2011, held at Sangmyung University, Cheonan.



6 October. 2011 : Professor James Landay and Ms. Miran Lee from Microsoft

Professor James Landay and Ms. Miran Lee visited our lab to share research interests. Professor Landay is a professor at University of Washington. He is one of the most active researchers in the HCI field and co-authored "The Design of Sites: Patterns for Creating Wining Web Sites". Ms. Miran Lee is a cenior university relations manager at Microsoft Research Asia.



1 September. 2011 : Moonhwan Lee joined as a PhD student.

Moonhwan Lee re-joined the lab as a PhD student. He plans to investigate ways to design intelligent product for emotionally satisfying user experiences.



1 September. 2011 : Prof. Nam teaches Interaction Design and Design Research Issues in the fall semester, 2011

Prof. Nam teaches two courses at ID KAIST, in the fall semester, 2011. Interaction Design is a class for 3rd year undergraduate design students. It deals with core skills for designing interactive products. One of the main parts is building interactive physical computing devices with Arduino. Design Reserarch Issues covers the nature of design, design research and design knowledge. Recent design reseach trends will be reviewed. Students will have a chance to think about what could be the best design research for designer-researcher of IDKAIST.



31 May. 2011 : KSDS Journal Paper on the relationship between automation and emotional experience

Munhwan Lee and Tek-Jin nam's paper titled ""Effect of Levels of Automation and Emotional Experience in Intelligent Products - Experimental Study of Intelligent Pot"" published in Journal of Korean Society of Design Science, Volume 24, No. 2. The paper investigated how different levels of automation affect emotional experience through interactive product development and an experiment.


25 May. 2011 : Prof. Nam gave a lecture at Ohio State University

Prof. Nam gave a lecture about Interaction Design at KAIST. He introduced tools, method and examples from interaction design and media interaction design course at KAIST. He met faculty member at the department of Design, OSU, including Prof. Noel Mayo, Prof. Scott Shim and Prof. Liz Sanders.



20 May. 2011 : Moon-Hwan Lee received the Fujitsu Design Award

MoonHwan Lee, a master student, received a Judge’s Special Award, awarded by Nobuo Otani, Corporate Vice President, Fujitsu Limited, at the ‘FUJITSU Design Award 2011: A LIFE with Future Computing,’ a competition aimed at the development of PC-related designs that bring innovation to everyday life. He suggested a futuristic device named 'The total recall agent' with Shohei Nakamura and YoungWook Jung as a team. Click this for more details



1 May. 2011 : Design by Tangible Stories paper published in Internation Journal of Design Vol 5(1).

A design case study paper titled "Design by Tangible Stories: Enriching Interactive Everyday Products with Ludic Value" is published in international journal of design (Vol 5(1) 2011, SSCI, A&HCI, SCIE indexed). The paper reports the results on one of our researches on ways adding values and meaning to everyday interactive proudcts and systems. Click here to download the paper


22 April. 2011 : Prof. Nam's visit to Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology

Prof. Tek-Jin Nam gave two talks at Institute of Design, IIT on April 21 and 22, 2011. The first talk was about a new design model being developed in CIDR to support systematic design for innovation. Professors and PhD researchers at IIT joined three hour long in-depth discussion. The second talk was given next day for all students and professors at IIT. The title of the talk was "Design+Technology=Augmented Design".






20 April. 2011 : Prof. Nam's Talk at Carnegie Mellon University

Prof. Tek-Jin Nam gave a talk for Interaction Design Seminar, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. The presentation was about a new research opportunities combining design and technology.



18 March. 2011 : William Gaver

William Gaver visited CIDR and discussed design research. Prof. Nam and CIDR's Ph.D students introduced their work and exchanged ideas on future directions. He is professor at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is known for the development of Cultural Probes method. He is interested in the design of interactive technologies for everyday life.



24 Feb. 2011 : Professor Tek-Jin Nam’s Talk for IxDA, DAAP, University of Cincinnati, USA

Prof. Tek-Jin Nam gave a talk for IxDA (Interaction Design Association), College of DAAP (Design, Art, Architecture, Planning), University of Cincinnati. The topic of the talk was "Rapid User Experience Prototyping".



1 Feb. 2011 : CIDR Alumni's work at Interactions magazine

Works of CIDR alumni, Heekyung Jung and Jidong Yim, were presented in the Demo Hour section of the Interactions magazine (volume 18, number 1).



22 Dec. 2010 : Young-Woo Park received a Prize from Creative Invention Contest

Ph.d Student Young-Woo Park received a Conference Chair Prize from Creative Invention Contest from Korea Invention Promotion Association at 22 Dec, Seoul. His invention was "a Mobile Device which can deliver affection and a Communication Technique using this Device". Also it was applied for a patent at 2010.



17 Dec. 2010 : Young-Woo Park was selected as a Young-Han Kim’s Global Leader Scholarship Student from KAIST

Ph.d Student Young-Woo Park was selected as a Young-Han Kim’s Global Leader Scholarship Student from KAIST. Two students who are in first year of Ph.d course at KAIST were chosen and he will be receiving this scholarship until 2013.2.



17 Nov. 2010 : Professor Tek-Jin Nam’s HCI Design Talk in School of Informatics, Indiana University, USA

Prof. Tek-Jin Nam delivered a HCI Design Talk in School of Informatics, Indiana University, Bloomington, USA on the 11th of November 2010. The topic of the talk was Augmented Design: Application of Emerging Technology in Design.



20-22 Oct. 2010 : Ju-Whan Kim presented his research work at IDMME-Virtual Concept, France

CIDR researcher Ju-Whan Kim had presented his work at IDMME-Virtual Concept, Bordeaux, France, 2010. His topic was "Event Code Generator: An Event Authoring Tool for Reflective Interaction Design Prototyping".

The Event Code Generator link is made in this site and being updated. It is a software tool for quick prototyping of gesture based interaction. Feel free to test the software and send us feedback.



1 July. 2010 : Ergonomic Design Guideline Project

A design resarch project with Amore Pacific is successfully finished. CIDR and DesignIS lab members became one team and Minjung Shon worked as a project manager. The goal was to develop an ergonomic design guideline for spatial identity.



23-24 June. 2010 : Design Workshop for Daedeok Total Design

A 24 hour design workshop was held as a part of the total design project run by Tangerine, an international design consultancy based in London and Seoul. CIDR members worked with students from hongik university and managers of Tangerine. Professor Tek-Jin Nam took part as a juror and a consultant.



25 May. 2010 : Product Design System Class Final Presentation at LG

The final presentation of Product Design System class 2010 was successfully done. The project theme of the class was initiated by LG electronics. Final 8 design concepts of future mobile communication and computing devices were presented. Munhwan Lee and Mark Whiting of CIDR worked as teaching assistants for the whole semester.



11 May. 2010 : John Heskett

John Heskett visited CIDR and discussed design research directions. He is the author of many infuential books including Industrial Design and Toothpicks and Logos.



6 May. 2010 : Callo by Jidong Yim on News Hour

Callo, a mobile phone robot developoed by CIDR OB member Jidong Yim, receive media highlights. He is about to complete his PhD in Simon Fraser University. Here is youtube video.


23 April. 2010 : Lunch at Sootonggol

CIDR had lunch together in Sootonggol after lab seminar. After lunch, we jumped.


10-15 April. 2010 : CIDR at CHI'10

There were two Work-In-Progress Posters (Young-Woo and Yoonjung) and one Media Showcase Video Night (Yoonjung) from CHI'10 Atlanta, GA, USA.




8 May. 2010 : Professor Tek-Jin Nam’s lecture in University of Cincinnati

Prof. Tek-Jin Nam was invited by the college of design, architecture, art and planning (known as DAAP), University of Cincinnati and delivered a lecture on the 9th of April 2010. The lecture was about the introduction to the education and research activities of IDKAIST and how to design for better user experience.


26 March. 2010 : Dinner Party

CIDR had dinner together with our new member Arashi. After dinner, CIDR members were invited to prof.'s home. We enjoyed wine and the music by his two daughters.











12 March. 2010 : Where the snow sits

There was a big snow in March. With this white snow, we felt that we were in a different world. Moisty snow made beautiful snow flowers on each tree. Minjung Sohn pictured. These were taken near to a small pond in KAIST. You can see the goose living there. Click and enjoy them in large scale =)









4 March. 2010 : Mobile UX Core Seminar

Prof. Nam gave a talk in Mobile UX Core Seminar 2010 on 4th of March. The seminar was held by Daedeok HRD Center. He made a speech about 'Mobile Interaction Trend and Design Method'.








19 February. 2010 : Eric Stolterman

Professor Eric Stolterman visited CIDR. He is a drector of HCI Design program in the school of informatics and computing, Indiana University Bloomington, USA. He gave a talk about designerly tool. There was a discussion on mutual research interests.


25 January. 2010 : Moonhwan came back to CIDR

Moonhwan Lee came back to KAIST from TU delft. He studied one year as a part of exchange program between KAIST and TU Deleft in the Netherlands. As a student of Design for Interaction in industirlal design department, he studied user-centered design methods and participated in design projects for Philips.


27 January. 2010 : Activities in HCI Korea 2010

5 Papers from CIDR were presented in HCI Korea 2010. The topics covered sustainable interaction, design by tangible narratives, toolkit for design programming and method for rich user feedback.


22 October. 2009 : CIDR at IASDR 2009

CIDR members were active in the IASDR 2009 conference, the biggest international design research conference held in Seoul from 18th of October to 22nd of October. Prof. Tek-Jin Nam worked as a special session chair and a key program committe member. He received an acknowledgement award at the closing ceremony. The special session was the most popular and successful event. Minjung Sohn participated in the doctoral colloquium and presented her paper about the application of unconcious human behavior in design. Jungu and Younjung worked as student volunteers. Don Norman introduced CIDR's design model in his keynote speech.



16 October. 2009 : Walter Aprile from TUDelft

Walter Aprile, a professor at TUDelft, visited CIDR. He said Munhwan is doin great in Holland. He was a professor at Interaction Design program at Ivera, Italy in the past. Now he is a member of iID-Studiolab at TUDelft and teaching interactive technologies.


7 October. 2009 : Jungu Sim joined CIDR as a fresh master student!!

Junggu Sim received BSc degree from Industrial Design, KAIST. He also worked at Daum communication and Cyworld SK communications from 2004 to 2006.


21 August. 2009 : Project Workshop in Seoul

CIDR members participated in a two-day project workshop in Seoul. All parties revised design concepts and user study plans.


15 August. 2009 : New Publications

Publications of CIDR are updated. That includes two journal papers in International Journal on Interactive Design and Manufacturing. A korean journal paper on dynamic design elements of ambient media is accepted for publication. Two papers (Augmented Design and Sustainable Interaction Design) are accepted for the oral presentation of IASDR2009 international design conference.


22 July. 2009 : Social Activity with Rekimoto Lab

CIDR and Rekimoto Lab(Tokyo University) had spent great time in Jingu Stadium, Tokyo. Yakuruto Swallows won the game in our enthusiastic cheers. Also there was a company project meeting in Tokyo.


22 July. 2009 : CIDR visited Tsukuba University

Professor Nam and students visited Tsukuba university and exchanged with Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences around Professor SeungHee Lee.

18 May. 2009 : Demo Videos Uploaded A series of demo videos were uploaded. Wireless MIDI solutions are being tested for quick experience prototyping (e.g. MusicWand). Check out the Misc>Video Resources page

17 May. 2009 : CIDR Home Comming There was a idKAIST Home Comming party. CIDR alumni also visited Daejeon.

21 April. 2009 : New publication form CIDR in International Journal of Design Collaborative 3D Workspace and Interaction Techniques for Synchronous Distributed Product Design Reviews (by Tek-Jin Nam, Kyung Sakong) was published in Vol 3, No 1 (2009) of International Journal of Design. 16 April. 2009 : idKAIST library next door A cozy design library opened next door to cidr. It offers physical space of design books, magazines and journals for all the idKAIST people to read and think.

6-9 April. 2009 : CIDR at CHI09 There was one oral presentation (Min-Jung Shon at Design Method session) and two interactive design exhibitions (Ju-Whan Kim and Chang-Won Kim at Design Vignette session) from CIDR at CHI'09 Boston.

10 March. 2009 : Dr. Rekimoto team visited The collaboration project between CIDR and Rekimoto lab at Tokyo university finished. Rekimoto team and CIDR discussed further research collaboration.

9 March. 2009 : MIDAS3.0 Serial Component MIDAS, designers prototyping toolkit, is still evolving. Now it is working in ActionScript 2.0 and 3.0 in flash. Together with arduino, MIDAS, FLartoolkit, phidgets and flash, designers can create many interactive prototypes from the early stage of the creative design process.

18 Feb. 2009 : New CIDR Homepage. The CIDR website is rebuilt.

31 Jan. 2009 : CIDR works accepted at CHI09. The design method paper by Min-Jung Sohn and design vignette presentations by Ju-Whan Kim and Chang-Won Kim are accepted in the CHI2009 conference. The conference is being held in 6-10 April 2009 at Boston, USA.

12 Dec. 2008 : Visit from Japan. Professor Satoshi Kanai from Hokkaido University, Japan visited CIDR to discuss future research collaboration.
